Slovak Culture and Language through Food

Ahoy!

Over the past two weeks, I cooked four different Slovak dishes to gain a cultural practice that I can take with me after the end of this course and analyze their window into Slovak culture and language. I made pirohy, palancinky, višňove koláče, and hemendex. With each of these recipes, I took their ingredients, origin, or name to better understand Slovak culture and language.

  • Hi Emma, thanks for sharing your presentation on Slovak culture and food! I feel like food is one of the best ways to appreciate the culture and it was truly amazing to see you make a dish that you researched from the culture. It also looked so tasty! I feel like it is also incredible how you were able to comprehend culture through the various ingredients which was very neat to see!

  • Hey Emma! I loved your presentation and the fact you did it on food makes it even better. The food looks so good and I wish I could try some! It's crazy how you were able to relate food with culture and understand the culture through the different ingredients. It's kind of similar to Korean food where most of the food in Korea is based on plants and vegetables.

  • Emma, I LOVED your presentation and the effort you put into it. I can't imagine the amount of time it must have taken to research food items, decide on a few, get the ingredients and actually make them! Wow. It all looked delicious. The pirohy reminded me of Nepali momo- which are basically dumplings which use either meat or a vegetarian filling. It's interesting to think how different cultures in different part of the worlds have all some variation of dumpling/ dough wrapped food item. I always wonder if these arose independently in different parts of the world or if one culture borrowed it from the other. Great work!

  • Emma, those dishes look amazing! I didn't think about cooking cultural cuisine as a part of the immersion process but I can see how effective it is to learning more about it. Its interesting to see how complex the Slovak culture is despite association that you brought up with Czechoslovakia.
