What tasks will you complete and what activities will you do this semester to meet your goals? How will you document and evaluate your progress?
Novice learners should consult the ‘Language Tasks’ page of the SDLAP Wiki and incorporate the required tasks in their learning. Be as specific as possible when planning activities, e.g., “I will watch YouTube videos to learn how to talk about the family.” or “I will consult a grammar text to learn about possessives.” Make sure you include some tasks that are relevant to your interests, e.g., “I will learn to understand soccer commentary.” or “I will learn to talk about the stock market.” Culture and language are, of course, inseparable. It is expected that all your language will be culturally appropriate and that every task will contribute to your cultural competence.

Comments
Since I can do basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Korean, I am planning study and learn advanced Korean literature. I received feedback on identifying my resources, so I chose 2 poems each for 3 topics.
As I did simple research about modern Korean poetry, I learned that it started in 1910. It has been spread and developed during the Japanese colonial period. Their writings convey their pain, lives, and hope for freedom. The fact that each period has different backgrounds and different meanings in each poem stood out to me.
When I first planned my self-directed learning plan, I was thinking of simple poems with simple topics. However, I could see that this opportunity is not only a way to improve my Korean abilities and skills, but also to investigate Korean culture. I could also learn about Korean history more deeply and closer by looking into their lives through their writings.
When I went back to Korea for winter break, one of my friends told me that she started to read poetry books. As a person who only read books and wrote long essays, poetry felt something new. Eventually, I found poetry attractive. Since I already have communication skills, I hope this study could give me more topics to discuss with more people.
