meet Dhaka: culture post #3

Anyone who is claustrophobic should be wary of visiting Dhaka, Bangladesh: dubbed the fastest growing city in the world.  Already Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.  Imagine half the population of the US, approximately 150 million people, all residing in the state of Iowa, and you have Bangladesh.  Because of the immense population density in the major cities like Dhaka and Chittagong, the countryside does not appear to reflect these numbers with many open wide fields.

Now sometimes to go a mere three miles in the city, it can take well over an hour.  Many people in the government are looking at different ways such as a subway system to overcome this problem, which immobilizes much of the city.

Unfortunately the increase in people in Dhaka has also increased the size of the slums, extremely unsafe places to live.  It will be interesting to see how the government addresses these problems in the near future.
