I found Mary’s presentation on Korean culture and language really interesting, specifically how one’s language, both in terms of body language and the terms of address used, changed significantly when communicating with someone who commands higher respect than oneself. This strict hierarchy is a bit strange to me, as an American with very limited time abroad, but I have seen it before in parts of Arab culture (different terms used for relatives on one’s father’s side) and in a lot of cultures which make use of second person honorifics. I know Persian has a more formal way of speaking when talking with elders, etc. (to and shoma are both 2^nd person pronouns, but to is a bit more casual), but I am not entirely sure of the exact ways.
