Cultural Post #6

Korean attitude about time is very different compared to America. There is a saying that Koreans run on Korean time because we are known to be consistently late to everything. In fact, in Korea it is common to even be an hour late to appointments with friends. And instead of picking an exact time to meet up, many friends will give a rough estimate of what time they should meet up. It is not really known why Koreans have such a relaxed attitude towards time, but there are some speculations that there are historical influences.

  • When I found this out about Korean culture I though it was really funny because of how similar this attitude towards time is to Ecuadorians. We have a saying that is "Hora Ecuatoriana," which means the Ecuadorian hour. The saying basically describes the hour between the designated time of arrival and the actual time that an Ecuador will arrive to it. It is extremely similar to "Korean Time!" It is also interesting that modern perceptions of time are perhaps influenced by perceptions of time that were the norm centuries ago. This post was super cool!

  • I found a really similar thing in Indian/South Asian culture. I wonder how many countries are like that and why. Japan, for example, is known for having a really punctual culture towards time. It would be cool to see some kind of chart or map of countries and their relationship to punctuality. I didn't know that Koreans had this attitude towards time, and it was interesting to find out.
