This semester has been a meaningful experience learning more about my language and my culture. One insight that I gained is how deeply language is tied to my identity, emotion, and history. Studying Korean not only pushed me to learn grammar and vocabulary, but also encouraged me to reflect on how other languages shape the way people view the world and connect with one another. I found it most difficult to express myself in Korean under pressure. I knew the correct phrases but couldn’t recall them quickly in conversation. I would sometimes revert back to English to fill in the missing phrase. But what I’ve most enjoyed is learning about the cultural aspects in language, specifically how values are expressed in everyday words. For example, honorifics made me think deeply about hierarchy, respect, and relational dynamics in Korean society. I remember going to Korea and having to relearn honorifics, but questioning why they were important. I will continue to learn Korean by talking to native speakers and watching Korean media with subtitles. I found the “Figuring Foreigners Out” article interesting, as it explored the different values of culture expressed through languages. Going forward, I would like to continue my understanding of Korean historical events and how they shaped my linguistic and cultural identity.
