Discussion Post #5

One part that interests me about Portuguese is mainly the fact that it is very comparable to Spanish. I feel like that also means it will be easier to learn than other languages because of my strong base in Spanish, and, hopefully, I'll be able to acquire it quicker!

As for the culture part of the question, my interests are both in Portuguese and Brazilian culture. They both have such a strong (and different!) cultural identity, from their clothing, celebrations, food, and more. I think the right answer to the question is truly just that their cultures as a whole interest me.

Obviously, culture and language are tied together, and another fascinating aspect about the Brazilian and Portuguese cultures and language is how different Portuguese is in Brazil as opposed to Portugal. I think that their differences could be an interesting topic to touch on. I'll need to study the vocabulary and dialectal differences to fully understand them both. Part of my objective will be to map out their subtle differences and how mutually intelligble the dialects really are.
