SDLC 112 - Learning Journal #3

As I’ve come to reflect on my third learning journal, I have been targeting my comprehension in both texts as well as listening. More specifically, I was working on integrating more complicated vocabulary into my comprehension. I realized that up until now, my everyday comprehension was sufficient but when it came to more complex listening exercises or formal conversations, the insertion of more complex and nuanced vocabulary had limited my ability to understand. There were several exercises that I had done to tackle this. The first one was watching a show or movie in Korean, but limiting myself with no subtitles or Korean subtitles only. A show in specific that I had watched was the second season of Bloodhounds (사냥개들). This was an exercise that was easier for me to commit to as it was a genuinely entertaining series, however, I did notice that my ability to pick up on certain terms, or phrases had improved. Trying to pick up on dialogue between characters while using their actions and tone as a helpful context clue was helpful in interpreting certain words despite me not knowing what it meant a hundred percent. Another useful tool that I referenced was watching short form videos or clips of Korean content creators talking about an interesting topic or interviewing people. I noticed that I don’t have the greatest attention span and sitting through something like a podcast would be difficult so using these short videos as an exercise for me to see how much I could pick up on was very helpful. Another bonus was that I was able to read comments left from other Koreans which allowed me to gain further insight into the video as well as improve my reading comprehension. Overall, I found that this method proved to be very efficient as it was a newer learning tactic that I had been experimenting with.
