Reflection Paper #2

It's amazing how far we’ve come as the semester is nearly at an end. I think that this semester has allowed myself to build a structured and strong foundational approach to targeting Korean. As this semester has progressed, I’ve grown to realize that I am an auditory and kinesthetic learner when it comes to languages. By constantly practicing with those around me as well as my language partner, I was best able to master my fluidity and hone my skills. Furthermore, I realized that the more I explored Korean culture, there was so much more to unravel. Researching and learning with intention has allowed me to further explore outside of what I already understood and had a perception of. In terms of what I found difficult, was following the syntactic structure of the Korean language as it evolves into modern time. To expand on this, each language typically has its own set of grammatical rules but this doesn't necessarily mean that each language abides by these rules as things such as slang and the way we as a culture have started coming up with new words and phrases dictate how such things are said. In a similar light, there are many phrases in Korean that are often abbreviated or I guess represented as “slang” that are difficult to pick up on especially if you are a new learner. Overcoming this obstacle I found especially difficult as I feel as though this is a skill that is best grown when you are placed in an environment that caters towards it. I think being able to converse with adults by bridging the generational gap that exists is such an awesome and fulfilling experience. By improving in Korean, I am better able to converse with adults, especially those who struggle with english. I plan on continuing my studies by immersing myself further within the culture whether this be through pieces of entertainment such as netflix, blogs, news articles, or even cuisine. I think that there are so many different ways in which you can grow through and in language as long as it is carried with intention.
The reading and learning materials I found especially useful throughout the duration of this course were probably short youtube clips as well as netflix shows. Some Netflix shows that I have partially watched in light of this course were Melo Movie and Singles Inferno. Both shows reveal the culture and language spoken in a variety of contexts which is super helpful, especially as someone who has grown up in America. Furthermore, finding interesting blogs or news articles have also proven to be effective when it comes to learning. Despite this method being a bit slower and definitely more tough, I was also able to hone in on my reading skills which was a bonus. As I continue my studies, I would love to learn more about the historical aspects of the Korean language. How the language came to be, and the influence that it has had on other languages as well.
