My Learning Plan
Learner Name: Samuel Lee Semester: Spring 2025
Language: Korean Course: SDLC 105

Where are you now? What can you do? What do you know?
Right now, I would say that I am at an intermediate-mid level of Korean. I can understand what is being said, with a intermediate level of understanding. However, I have challenges reading and writing at a high level.
Use the Levels of Competence document and the LinguaFolio® checklists to assess your current abilities in your language. For more information, see the SDLAP Wiki.

What is your ultimate goal? What is your goal for this semester?
What do you want to be able to do with this language at the end of this semester and in the future?
My ultimate goal is for me to become proficient enough to use Korean at the workplace. I would like to be able to communicate my thoughts and results to Korean clients. For this semester, I hope to gain an understanding of how to learn language.

What tasks will you complete and what activities will you do this semester to meet your goals? How will you document and evaluate your progress?
Novice learners should consult the ‘Language Tasks’ page of the SDLAP Wiki and incorporate the required tasks in their learning. Be as specific as possible when planning activities, e.g., “I will watch YouTube videos to learn how to talk about the family.” or “I will consult a grammar text to learn about possessives.” Make sure you include some tasks that are relevant to your interests, e.g., “I will learn to understand soccer commentary.” or “I will learn to talk about the stock market.” Culture and language are, of course, inseparable. It is expected that all your language will be culturally appropriate and that every task will contribute to your cultural competence.

Task 1 Interpersonal communication
Type of Task ___ Interpersonal Communication ___ Presentational Speaking
___ Interpretive Listening ___ Presentational Writing
___ Interpretive Reading

What do I need to learn to complete this task? (goal) I need to find a native Korean speaker that will be able to correct me and teach me. I will also need to learn the basics of Korean structure and communication.
How will I learn? (learning activities and resources) I will be learning by holding conversations with my Korean teacher. This will help me get used to hearing people speak in Korean as well as speaking in Korean myself.
How will I document what I have learned? (artifacts) I will write down logs about what conversations my mentor and I had. We will start from the basics such as talking about how our day went.
How well can I accomplish this task? (self-assessment) I believe I can accomplish this task very well given time and practice. This will not be easy to master interpersonal communication, but this will be a learning experience for me.

Task 2 Interpretive Listening
Type of Task ___ Interpersonal Communication ___ Presentational Speaking
___ Interpretive Listening ___ Presentational Writing
___ Interpretive Reading

What do I need to learn to complete this task? (goal) I will need a mentor who will constantly be speaking to me in Korean.
How will I learn? (learning activities and resources) Like interpersonal communication, I will be having conversations with my mentor in Korean. However, this will be more focused on listening rather than speaking. I will also listen to Korean songs and watch Korean movies.
How will I document what I have learned? (artifacts) I will journal the Korean songs I’ve listened to as well as Korean movies and write down what phrases I learned from each one.
How well can I accomplish this task? (self-assessment) I believe this task will be relatively difficult as it will involve much active listening. I will have to actively be listening to lyrics and words to make sure that I understand. However, I believe this task can be accomplished.

Task 3 Interpretive Reading
Type of Task ___ Interpersonal Communication ___ Presentational Speaking
___ Interpretive Listening ___ Presentational Writing
___ Interpretive Reading

What do I need to learn to complete this task? (goal) I need to be able to read simple words in Korean without taking too long.
How will I learn? (learning activities and resources) I will use a textbook and regularly text my parents in Korean. I will also change my phone setting to Korean so that I will always be reading in Korean.
How will I document what I have learned? (artifacts) I will keep a log of what I’ve read and what words I’ve learned from it.
How well can I accomplish this task? (self-assessment) I believe this will be the hardest task. It will involve a lot of concentration and intentionality. However, I don’t see this as an obstacle in learning how to read Korean.

Task 4 Presentational Speaking
Type of Task ___ Interpersonal Communication ___ Presentational Speaking
___ Interpretive Listening ___ Presentational Writing
___ Interpretive Reading

What do I need to learn to complete this task? (goal) I will need to improve upon my pronunciation and intuition in Korean. I will also need to know the grammatical structure and sentence structure in formal and informal settings.
How will I learn? (learning activities and resources) I will watch Korean informational videos such as TED Talks and YouTube presentations about information and knowledge that I already know.
How will I document what I have learned? (artifacts) I will be given feedback from my language partner and will write notes about my progress.
How well can I accomplish this task? (self-assessment) I believe I am at a beginner level as I can read a script very slowly, but struggle with comprehension and fluency.

Task 5 Presentational Writing
Type of Task ___ Interpersonal Communication ___ Presentational Speaking
___ Interpretive Listening ___ Presentational Writing
___ Interpretive Reading

What do I need to learn to complete this task? (goal) I will need to understand writing structure and the basics of the Korean alphabet. I will also need to broaden my vocabulary.
How will I learn? (learning activities and resources) I will learn by analyzing structure and expressions used in children’s books. I will also use apps such as Duolingo or Anki for grammar drills.
How will I document what I have learned? (artifacts) I will have grammar and vocabulary notes written in Korean.
How well can I accomplish this task? (self-assessment) I believe this will be one of the more challenging aspects of learning Korean. I’ve always struggled with grammar in English as well, but hope this will have some overlap.
