My primary focus has been on improving my listening and speaking skills in Korean through the TV series Squid Game. Claire and I watched two episodes together, during which she paused to explain key sentences, grammar, and cultural contexts. I also worked on writing short sentences using the vocabulary and grammar I learned from the show. My goal was to enhance my comprehension of spoken Korean in real-life contexts and to learn practical phrases and grammar structures that are commonly used in everyday conversations. Claire introduced a new and engaging method of learning by incorporating Squid Game into our sessions. She paused the show at key moments to explain the dialogue, grammar, and cultural nuances. This approach not only made learning more enjoyable but also provided me with a deeper understanding of how language and culture intertwine. Claire’s patience and enthusiasm were instrumental in making this method effective. I wrote down sentences from the show and practiced using them in different contexts. Claire explained the social and cultural backgrounds depicted in the show, which enhanced my understanding of Korean society. Watching Squid Game with Claire was highly effective. The real-life dialogues provided practical language usage, and Claire’s explanations made complex grammar and cultural contexts more accessible. Writing sentences helped reinforce my learning, though I found that I need more practice to use them fluently in conversation. The cultural discussions were particularly enlightening and added a rich layer to my language learning experience. I realized the importance of integrating cultural learning with language practice. In the upcoming weeks, I will seek out more multimedia resources, such as Korean movies, music, and news articles, to diversify my learning materials. I also plan to set aside time for regular speaking practice to improve my fluency and confidence. The show provided a window into Korean social hierarchies and cultural norms, which Claire explained in detail. Understanding these aspects made the language more meaningful and contextualized. I successfully learned and used several new phrases from the show in my conversations with Claire. One particular phrase, “이건 뭐야?” (What is this?), became a staple in our discussions. I struggled with the rapid pace of some dialogues, especially when characters used slang or spoke quickly. This highlighted the need for more focused listening practice. I will revise my short-term goals to include more listening practice, specifically targeting understanding rapid speech and slang. I also aim to watch at least one episode of a Korean drama per week with Claire, followed by a detailed discussion and writing practice.
