The difference between sound and spelling is that there is an oral aspect to sound. Sound is the oral element you produce when speaking while spelling is the way a word is visually represented usually through an alphabetic structure. This distinction is significant for my language-learning efforts as it can provide guidance and clear up any confusion I may encounter. For example, in the English language, there exist plenty of words whose spelling does not align with the way it should be structurally pronounced. The korean language which will be my target language consists of 19 consonant phonemes and 10 vowel phonemes. What comes to my head immediately are the “v” and “f” sounds in the English alphabet which don’t exist in the Korean language. That is why you will see a lot of native korean speakers struggle with pronouncing those sounds in particular. There are very few consonant clusters in Korean making the words less restrictive and easier to pronounce. By focusing on individual sounds, vowels, and or words in a multi part speech, I plan on honing in on my ability to recognize certain patterns of speech. Through repetition and repeated practice, I plan on acquiring the ability to discriminate differentiated segments in my listening with the help of my language instructor.
