As per my language goals, I have not started writing extensively in my target language. However, the writing I do, I perform by free hand. Much like in English, conjunctions are used to link independent clauses. For example, “тому” means therefore. I can use it in the complex sentence: Я люблю вивчати радянську історію, тому вивчаю українську мову (I love studying Soviet history, therefore I study Ukrainian language). In this case, each clause is a simple sentence, but when connected using the conjunctive adverb “тому” it becomes a complex sentence. You can also create a complex sentence with an independent and dependent clause. This does not always require a conjunction. For example in the sentence “Лежачи на дивані, я читала книгу” (Lying on the couch, I read a book), the independent clause follows the dependent clause without a linking word. This is possible because the word лежачи is the past participle of the verb лежати. By turning this verb into a past participle, it creates a participial clause, which is a kind of dependent clause.
