Cultural Post 3

This past weekend, I was talking to a friend from Korea about the younger generation of Korea. According to him, younger people are starting to become more disrespectful to each other and to their elders. I was shocked to hear that since Korean is a country that has upheld Confucian teachings for many centuries. We wondered why for some time on why this was the case in Korea. We came to an understandable conclusion. We concluded that it may be due to the long lasting pressure to conform to Korean society. With many western cultures becoming more liberal, it's affecting the eastern cultures. Younger people are now fed up with conservative norms and are rebelling against it by implementing more western ideals. This was a very interesting conversation to have with my friend that discussed Korean culture in modern times.

  • Modern Korean culture truly has changed a lot. I'm guessing it's due to globalization and the surge of technology and social media. I hear my Korean cousins cursing in english all the time which is definitely not my influence! Still, a lot of great and not so great things are happening in Korea due to this advancement in technology and global connection so it's interesting to keep up with current events on the news...

  • Wow, this post was as surprising to me as it was to you. I wonder why this is happening. As you mentioned maybe it is because of the pressure upholding on these younger generations. Overall very interesting and it would be cool to investigate this more and follow up in a future cultural post.
