These past few weeks of Korean have been some of my favorites to date. Jason, I have had some great experiences and conversations. We have been diving a bit more into the cultural side of learning. We talked about the Korean War, the impacts it had on Koreans, and also the connection it built with America. My grandfather served in the Korean War and has told me many stories about his time in Korea. It was very fun telling Jason these stories and explaining to him how my grandfather viewed the culture and all the positive experiences he had there. While my grandfather did not engage to a large extent with the culture because it was during a war, he did tell me stories about working alongside the Korean soldiers and the stories he heard from them, along with the food and games they played. Jason really did enjoy hearing these stories because it was his first time hearing about them from the perspective of an American soldier, and he is glad to indirectly know someone who fought in the Korean War. We also were working on my conversational Korean along with my expressions, which we have been focusing on this entire semester. I can really tell that my conversation is getting better I am able to have small chats with Jason in passing, which has been boosting my confidence in my Korean capabilities. I look forward to these last few meetings with Jason and I cannot wait to show Isaac all that I have learned. It is also good because Jason and I have a shared folder that holds everything we have done this year which I can share with Isaac for next semester for references and to get a better understanding of what we need to work on still vs. what has been accomplished already.

  • I think it's great that you are learning about Korean culture and history alongside the language as they are both so deeply connected! The Korean War is a great event to learn about since it is also a part of American history. Being able to feel yourself getting better at Korean is great and keeping a folder on everything you have been learning is a great idea as well.

  • The Korean War is a very important part of Korean history as it created two distinct nations, North and South Korean. I think it's very interesting that South Koreans don't even consider North Koreans as "one of them". Many non-Koreans believe that North and South Koreans are both Koreans, but Koreans actually have the opposite stance. Anyways, I'm glad you had time to learn about the Korean War.
