Languages go extinct for a plethora of reasons. In an increasingly globalized world, the 83 most common languages dominate business and mass communication. Moreover, oppressive histories of colonialism and imperial empires significantly contributed to the extinction of many languages. Cultural genocide such as this took place though forced displacement and assimilation of indigenous people. When a language dies, the global bank of intelligence experiences a loss. Languages offer key insight into Culture of diverse groups of people. Moreover, languages hold immense depth and breadth of specific knowledge about biology, ecology, philosophy, history, and many other disciplines. These local knowledge are only available through the language of local populations. One tool for language preservation is creating audio and video recordings of native speakers. These videos serve as an archive of the language. I think that AI could be a mechanism of reviving extinct languages, however, it calls into question ethics in terms of whose intellectual property the language belongs to.
