If I received a research grant to conduct a linguistic study of Ukrainian language, I would want to record as many dialects of the language as possible. FIrst I would research where different dialects are spoken. Then, I would travel to these regions and engage in conversations with local speakers of the dialects. I would then go back and listen to the recordings and pick out word roots, sentence syntax, and the phonological inventories of the dialects to understand how exactly they different from “standard” ukrainian. Then I would study the history of the dialects to understand how these dialects formed in interaction with surrounding languages and cultures, or even how they formed in isolation from outside influences. Particularly, I want to look at the influence of Polish, Romanian, and Russian on Ruthinian. By studying these aspects, I would understand how regional histories shape modern language. Moreover, I would love to study how broader modern social movements and historical events such as war have shaped which dialects of Ukrainian are the most socially acceptable to speak in public.

  • This is great, I thought out my Nona. I live with my grandparents and they are from Italy and while both of them are Italian they speak different dialects which is so cool to me. I really enjoy learning the small differences between them and I am glad you are passionate about it too!
