Chuseok (Harvest Moon Festival) is a classic Korean festival that takes place in mid-Autumn. The actual name Chuseok translates roughly to “Autumn Evening” but some Koreans also refer to it as Hangawi which is from older Korean roots and it means roughly “the great middle of autumn”. The festival is celebrated in both South and North Korea; that being said the North Korean celebration only last one day compared to the three-day timespan of the South Korean roots. It is common for people to wear the Hanbok which is classic Korean traditional attire during holidays and festivals. The overarching theme of the festival is to celebrate the harvest which is seen to be good! In addition to this Koreans often visit their ancestral hometowns and relatives to enjoy food and traditions together as a whole family. In addition to this people frequently go to their hometowns to honor the passed loved ones from their family. They do this to pay respect to their elders and celebrate the harvest. One of the most prominent traditions is eating Songpyeon, which is a basic traditional Korean rice cake, the process of making them can be long and tedious, for example, they must be specifically steamed over pine needles. Along with Songpyeon, Hangwa is consumed which is an overarching term for sweet foods that are made with tteok. You make Hangwa with rice flour, fruit, honey, and various roots. It can be personalized in order to add color or designs. It is also not only eaten during Chuseok but on most holidays and special occasions throughout the year like birthdays and weddings etc. On the other hand, the people of North Korea also celebrate Chuseok although their celebrations are much different. While the details of the celebration are not as well known in North Korea, they only spend one day celebrating, and most people who are able to try to see their ancestors although with the socioeconomic differences, it is harder for them to accomplish that. Another point I touched on earlier is the Hanbok, this is a special traditional dress/outfit that Koreans will wear during special occasions such as Chuseok. Koreans will also often play Folk games to pass the time with their family members, these include games such as Yut Nori which is a board game. Personally, I think Chuseok is a very unique holiday and an awesome celebration. I would love to experience it one day in the future.

I think the role of food in Korean culture is really prominent and that shows really well through this culture post on Chuseok! I wasn't aware of Chuseok's celebrations in North Korea so that is interesting. It seems there are celebrations for harvest in almost every culture which is very interesting!
