Poetry and Culture

After the cultural reading and finishing my cultural project, I was able to find some interesting connections.The section on cultural difference categories was most relevant. The categories are: symbols, heros, and rituals.Especially with the poem that i chose, the Shahnameh, many of the heros of Persian culture come from this "Epic of the Kings." All of these heros uplift the culture and strengthen the moral codes and norms that they cherish most.There are also endless values given by the Shahnemeh, for example:the proverb shahnemeh quoteknowledge is power "one who has wisdom is powerful"finding true friends is "If the enemy is a thorn it is because of you own sowing, if he is aonly possible you you brocade it is because of your own weaving"are worthy of themReward and punishment "when you dg the pit dig it according to the estimate of the size of body"are inevitable. Culture Shock

I have been abroad to Paris, but during my stay, I did not experience culture shock. I feel like was able to do avoid it by having a strong connection with the culture before arriving on Paris soil.Culture Shock is a loss of familiar signs and symbols in social interaction.There are 4 stages involved in the culture shock:A) Fascination: everything is new and exciting, aka "the honeymoon stage"B) Aggression: a hateful attitude for the host country (ethnocentric)C) Superiority: the traveller develops a sense of humor and instead of criticism, deals with differences by cracking jokesD) Acceptance: the traveller is finally able to adjust and not feel any strainWays to avoid culture shock are through:1 - getting to know the people, their interests, norms, and language (especially important)2 - Removing yourself from an outsider/tourist position

Verbs

Verbs in Persian are an interesting concept for me because I am very used to just changing the ending of the verb as opposed to dealing with both suffixes and prefixes.To Create: afareedanpast: man afareedam (i created)to create the past is the most simple, add the correct pronoun and then add the proper ending:pronoun - suffixI amyou eehe/she/it -we imyou idthey andPresent: man mi afaram (I create)to create the present, remove the -d- and add mi and the proper suffixGerund: man doram mi afaram (I am creating)to create the gerund, use the proper pronoun, then add the and conjugate dostan (to have) and then mi and the conjugated verb

1a) An examples of Farsi's use of affixes is seen in verbs. The suffixes of verbs and adjectives agree with the pronoun.Man (I) Khoobam (good) asstam (it is) - "I am good"* - AM is used at the end of the verb asst (to be) and the adjective khoob (good).To contrast, to say "you are good" you would use the ending -ee to agree with the pronoun, Shoma.Shoma Khoobee assteeb) Aggluntative: helpful because I know to expect the words to be made of different morphemes (components of words - affixes, bases...etc). It also going to be good for me the see common patterns and make my learning easier.c). The symbols for the vowels aren't normally used in everyday Persian - they are much more of a teaching tool.2. The songs are great reinforcement tools. They help me listen for the words I know versus wordsI do not. Also, I'm able to enhance vocabulary. In addition to this, it makes my learning experience more fun.

Universal Reading

1. Languages I am currently studying in linguistic terms.Farsi:Morphological – agglutinative – uses sufficesVerbs express tense and they also refer back to the subject and quantitySyntactic Structure – OV, SOV – prepositional phrases are normally positioned before the VerbRussian: Morphological – syntheticSyntactic Structure – the sentence structure is not highly dependent on word order2. Important Characteristic:Persian makes extensive use of word building and combining affixes, stems, nouns and adjectives.For verbs, knowing the suffixes that refer back to the pronoun or person the sentence is about.There are 6 vowels, which are written into the words; are shown as symbols either about or below the consonant.3. I will focus on the formation of words using the symbols to indicate vowel sounds, so as to improve my reading and comprehension of the words.

Learning goals and plan for the next week

By the end of the week, sunday (2/15) I would like to accomplish the following:a). continue my knowledge and recognition of numbers and the alphabetb). memorize basic hello/goodbye phrases, colors, and days of the weekc). begin working through basic adjectives, such as good, bad, cold, hot...etcI will use the following tasks to assist my memorization:a). for the continuation of my knowledge of the alphabet and the different forms of each letter depending upon its placement within the word - a self made chart where I have to fill in the chart from memory.For numbers I am going to continue memorizing the spelling for the names (such as 1 to one) by the use of flashcards.b). For phrases, this will be a big part of the drill for the week, using them more and more aloud and making them more natural and easy to say and respond to.For the colors I will continue to use flashcards as well as using everyday objects around me to make me come up with the name of the color to describe them when I see them.For days of the week, I am going to try to write them in my planner and use them where ever possible in my everyday activities - I will also use my flashcards to assist with their repetition.c). For the basic adjectives, this is just easing into them and learning how to correcting pronounce them and use them in a sentence form. I am hoping to also work on this in drill.The resources I will be using are the following:a). Alphabet - self made, fill in the blank worksheetNumbers - flashcards - and they are also a main component in the days of the week and will therefore be enforced by learning them.b). Phrases - repetition, drill, and the BYKI flashcards (alternating between sound, no sound, and what is displayed on the card itself)Colors - the website (http://www.digitaldialects.com/Farsi.htm) has a great matching up game for the colors.Days of the Week - again a website it helpful (http://iteslj.org/v/pe/se-days.html) and I am also planning on just using the farsi version of the days of the week in my plannerc). For the adjective, I am going to use the notes from drill and make flashcards to begin learning from.I will use drill as a large form of my evaluation - having my instructor ask me questions pertaining to my learning goals and seeing if I have memorized all that I set out to do. I am also going to create a mini test, using children's workbooks in English and shifting the activities to fill my needs in Farsi.

Language Partners

The first meeting was awesome! It really feels like it is all coming together now. It is always beneficial to feel like you have the option of talking with someone who actually understands what is going on in a language you are just beginning. I really enjoyed hearing a native speaker explain things and simplify them more than a website or book is able to do. Overall, I am feeling very confident about learning Farsi :D

My Learning Style

Reading the information about autonomous learning was really intriguing. There were a lot of sections that talked about people and styles that heighten learning. Such as "repetition, when imitating others' speech;resourcing, i.e., having recourse to dictionaries and other materials; translation, that is, using their mother tongue as a basis for understanding and/or producing the target language; note-taking; deduction, i.e., conscious application of L2 rules...(http://iteslj.org/Articles/Thanasoulas-Autonomy.html)"I think all these things are very important to learning a new language. Many people do not think of learning a language in the sense that it can have a formula and steps just like a math or science problem.The reading, What is Learner Autonomy and How Can It Be Fostered?, also mentions constructivism. Which is key to creating a formula in learning languages; especially for teaching yourself a language.For me once I learned one language it was easy to see how to replicate the teaching style. Start with pronunciation, move to simple vocabulary - cognates, etc.From then FIRE chart i am generally a Factual and Insightful learner with a few Rational tendencies when it comes to teaching styles and grading/acknowledgement of work.As a learner I think the best plan is going to be laying out a detailed map of the oder in which to tackle tasks. What Vocabulary, grammar, and verbs to tackle fist. I will need to find ways to create a system of checking my progress - so making/finding worksheets.
