In my updated learning plan, I want to emphasize spoken communication and vocabulary acquisition. Over the summer, I got a basic understanding of Korean grammar and started speaking (awkwardly and disfluently) with my mother, grandmother, and grandfather. Even though my sentences averaged about five words each, I found that speaking made me much more comfortable with internalizing grammar concepts and vocabulary words. However, my vocabulary is extremely limited. I want to know more basic vocabulary that can apply to every day situations such as asking for directions, going shopping, ordering food, or talking about your day. Over the summer, reading comic books really helped my vocabulary acquisition and my reading speed. I think I’m past the level of basic children’s literature, and I’d like to start reading slightly more advanced books while still staying basic (like children’s books). This is how I plan on improving my vocabulary and knowledge of sentence structure.
Also, I’d really like to focus on honorifics. I’m mostly learning Korean so that I can speak with my grandparents and give my mom a break from speaking English, so I figured it would be important to learn how to speak properly.
