Posting about Culture

An essential goal of the SDLAP is to develop a deeper understanding of
the cultures of the peoples who use the SDLAP languages. One way to
develop this deeper understanding is to reflect upon events in these
cultures, portrayals of these cultures in the media, and various
products and practices that you discover as you learn the language.  This
reflection is to be the subject of at least 8 cultural posts throughout the
course of the semester.
These posts may be related to your cultural
project
, but that is not necessary.

Reflection goes beyond the 'facts' of a culture.  In MLC 105, you study a number of ways
of thinking about culture
.  As you learn 'facts' about a
culture--typical foods, words for family relationships, etc.--think
about what these 'facts' tell you about the beliefs, perspectives, and
values of the culture.
Your thoughts can be the substance of your cultural posts.

You should also be exploring how cultures--particularly the culture(s) you are studying--are portrayed in the media, in textbooks, etc.  Use your culture posts to reflect upon what you discover in the course of the semester.

Observations about people, languages, and cultures tend to lead to discussion.  Please take advantage of your ability to read the observations of others and comment upon them.
