I always enjoyed the art of different languages. I speak Spanish on an intermediate level, and I think I enjoyed the deep personal relationship I was able to form with my mom as we spoke Spanish together. It was our "secret language". Overall, I believe I enjoy the social aspect that benefits from different languages. The ability to fluently communicate with many people and learn about their cultures fuels me.

As many others would agree, languages are usually difficult to learn. This includes different accents, vocabulary, grammar, and so much more. Rather than say "dislike", I believe that learning languages challenges me. Sometimes I enjoy this personal challenge, but at the same time, I would like to communicate with others.

Through the surveys I completed, I learned that I am 50% an auditory learner, 45% a visual learner, and 5% a tactile learner. I have tried to keep my Korean up-to-date by watching Korean entertainment and music. I did not knowingly continue this behavior, but I believe that it had a great influence on my language learning skills.

I plan to expand my learning activities by starting to watch the Korean news, read the Korean news and novels. I would like to expand my vocabulary and daily terms.

  • I love "secret languages"! How have you and your mom used your 'secret language' in real-life situations? Fantastic post, Brenda. You have such interesting linguistic experiences and backgrounds. You should definitely use your increased sensitivity to language to forge connections with people around the globe, and to build a network that continues to promote your professional and intellectual development. You also have a good mix of learning styles. Auditory learnings tend to have better pronunciation and speaking skills, because they are more acutely aware of subtle differences in phonetic articulation.
