Over the past week, my Korean language learning has focused on understanding phonological sound change rules and the different uses of Korean particles (agglutinative markers). Specifically, I studied common sound changes such as liaison, tense consonant formation, and variations in the pronunciation of final consonants (받침). At the same time, I worked on distinguishing the functions of frequently used particles that mark topics, subjects, and objects, and how their meanings shift depending on context. Through repeated practice and pronunciation exercises, we integrated grammar learning with oral practice, which helped reinforce both my grammatical awareness and overall language accuracy.

At the beginning of this learning period, my primary goal was not focused on listening comprehension, but rather on making progress in reading and writing. I hoped to better understand Korean sentence structures when reading textbook examples and short passages, and to apply sound change rules and particles correctly in my own writing. By strengthening my awareness of how particles function within sentences, I aimed to write more natural and grammatically accurate Korean sentences, rather than relying on direct translation from English.

Although this learning cycle did not involve extensive interaction with community language partners, classroom-based practice and guided exercises still allowed for meaningful reciprocal interaction. Through peer practice and instructor feedback, I was able to test my understanding of particle usage and receive corrections when my interpretations were inaccurate. These interactions highlighted the importance of clarification and feedback in language learning, especially when dealing with subtle grammatical features such as particles that often do not have direct equivalents in English. This experience reinforced my short-term goal of prioritizing accuracy and structural understanding over speed or fluency.

In terms of learning strategies, my regular practice involved closely observing, reading, and attempting to understand sentences presented in the textbook. I paid particular attention to how particles were attached to nouns and how they functioned within different sentence patterns. I also analyzed example sentences by breaking them down into grammatical components, which helped me better understand sentence meaning and structure. In addition, I consciously connected written forms with pronunciation rules by considering how sound changes would apply when sentences were spoken. To build on this understanding, I practiced writing simple sentences that mirrored textbook patterns, intentionally incorporating newly learned particles and grammatical structures.

Overall, these strategies proved effective for improving my reading comprehension and grammatical accuracy. Analyzing sentences in detail helped me slow down and notice patterns that I previously overlooked. However, this approach was sometimes time-consuming and mentally demanding, which occasionally led to frustration. Despite this challenge, I felt a sense of accomplishment when I was able to independently identify the correct particle usage or explain why a particular sound change occurred. These moments of success increased my confidence and motivation to continue studying Korean at a deeper level.

Moving forward, I plan to build on what I have learned about the Korean language by continuing to expand my understanding of particles and sentence structures, especially in more complex texts. I also hope to gradually increase the length and complexity of my writing while maintaining grammatical accuracy. In terms of learning strategies, I plan to continue using close reading and sentence analysis, while also experimenting with additional writing-focused activities to reinforce what I have learned. Through this reflection process, I have become more aware of my strengths and challenges as a language learner, which will help guide my future learning goals and strategies.
