Due by 5pm on Sunday, October 6: Discussion Post #5 on the Ning

Do some preliminary research on what interests you about the target culture and describe how this topic relates to language. Do you need any special vocabulary or linguistic knowledge to engage this topic? If so, have you included objectives in your learning plan to engage this topic?

  • The things that most interests me about the target culture is the background and history of Korea as a whole. Korea is greatly influenced by Chinese and Japanese cultures which are seen (because of the wars and lots of history of fighting between these countries as a whole throughout history which is also a big thing to Korea’s history). It is also seen a lot in Confucianism, which is actually still practiced today as well in Korea. These ideas are seen in the ethical code of conduct in social life and the idea of showing respect to family and elders in the simplest sense. There are other things like greetings and how people interact for meals but I understand this as I grew up in a Korean household and have a good grasp of these topics and ideas but not as much in the history of Korea and the “fundamentals” of the culture itself. In terms of special vocabulary, I do not think there would be too much other than some learning the origins of words just a little bit like how Chinese as a language developed and how Japanese and Korean did as well. In terms of linguistic knowledge, it would encompass the names of all involved in the history of Korea and the significance of every event in Korea’s history. I have included objectives in my original learning plan to engage in this topic because I would really like to learn about Korea’s history because it is important and a topic that is seen as common in Korea and something that is seen as fundamental and what all Koreans should know by the Korean people themselves living in Korea (because it is taught in Korea’s education system).
