For my cultural project, I think I want to examine the tea culture in Turkey. As an avid tea-drinker myself, surrounded by a family who also drinks tea like there’s no tomorrow, I’m interested in discovering how the Turkish tea culture differentiates itself from others. I want to look into the types of tea consumed, the preparation style, the historical context behind the Turkish love of tea, the social role tea plays, and tea customs. I also want to compare Turkish tea culture with what I’ve observed in American culture regarding the preparation and appreciation of tea. I’ve already done some preliminary research, but I definitely think I need to do more, specifically regarding the history of tea in Turkish culture. I also want to ask Merve about her experience with tea and what that means to her. Hopefully she can also provide me some important words or phrases regarding tea. I will also ask my Turkish “pen-pal” that I’ve been in contact with. Tea isn’t a very technical topic, so I think I’ll be able to find good words or phrases to use that are simple enough for me to pronounce and present.
