Discussion Post 3

The diagram on page 9 shows that you start off with learning the basics of a target language then start branching off into specific concentrations of linguistics as you advance your knowledge of the language. When you combine these different concentrations, you develop a more holistic understanding of the language. This is because you are able to communicate information depending on the situation, place, and group of people, therefore, you observe the change and evolution of the language in society. Through interacting with different perspectives, you can analyze these differences and be able to see the language in a holistic lens.

The perspective I personally favor is psycholinguistics. I think that the human mind is very fascinating, hence, is one of the reasons why I am majoring in psychology. How the human mind comes into play in this perspective is that the mind processes a language, which is responsible for our understanding and producing of that language. Furthermore, language interacts with several other cognitive processes such as language processing, acquisition, cognition, and even disorders. In previous psychology courses, I have learned the parts of the brain and what certain regions are responsible for speaking, understanding, and learning, which are all crucial in learning a target language.

I think that the different disciplinary perspectives allow me to create a specific angle at which I desire to expand my knowledge on Korean. Knowing the complexity of the Korean language, I think that the trajectory of my learning plan is very scattered because I have many linguistic perspectives in mind that I desire to learn more about in Korean.
