My topic for cultural project is about K-pop music and its fans culture. K-pop music is one of the popular part of Korea culture. K-Pop is an abbreviation from the word Korean Pop. It originated from South Korea but has a steady increase of followers from all over the world. Unlike the name, K-Pop music genre is more than just pop. The K-Pop that we know today emerges around the 1990s during the Hallyu Wave. This is the period when people starts to pay attention and interested in Korean production like the Korean drama sand music industry and K-Pop starts to spread their wings to the other region.
"Fans" is an abbreviation for fanatics of a given subject. And then, "K-pop fans" are people interested in K-pop and its related subjects. K-pop has emerged as a strong global phenomenon, and their fans are found all over the world, both inside and outside of Korea. Most of the fans will be teenagers. As a part of youth subculture, K-Pop has a big influence to the teenagers and youth not only in their music taste, but as well as their sense of style and fashion.
For my cultural project I knew that I wanted to do something related to healthcare. Looking through a history of the healthcare system, I came across an interesting topic known as Ayurveda. This word comes from Sanskrit origins and literally means the power of life. Ayurveda is an ancient Hindi art of medicine and prolonging life. It relies on many homeopathic remedies for illnesses and focuses on balancing the entirety of the body versus treating specific symptoms. Ayurveda stresses the idea of universal interconnectedness and defines certain fundamental energies that guide our everyday lives. As stated, Ayurveda focuses on balance. Specifically the balance of mind, body and spirit. An Ayurvedic lifestyle is one that relies on yoga and a healthy and balanced diet based off of the Hindu gunas. Although it is very different from Western medicine, it has similarities with theories on osteopathic medicine which treats the entire body as a system instead of focusing on the portion that may be in pain at the time. The roots of Ayurveda run deep into Indian culture and, although not necessarily associated with Hinduism, the methodology is based in the Hindu Vedas and there are many Hindu Gods associated with this concept. Many Ayurvedic terms have Sanskrit origin. Although I am not specifically learning Sanskrit, it is the root of the Hindi language so knowing some words may be helpful. I aim to learn more about the Ayurvedic process and perhaps interview some people who are familiar with Ayurveda or who practice the lifestyle themselves. Throughout my learning I will continue to learn names of body parts/illnesses as they relate to the Ayurvedic process.
Korean is very famous for its education quality internationally. They scored in top 5 among 200+ countries in Maths, science and language. However, high school students always complains about that they are under huge psychological pressure from their peers. The peer pressure contains not only on studies, but also socially. Teenagers care about their appearance, romance relationships and social statues in school. Instead of American culture, Korean culture does not give much privacy to individuals. This culture trend creates gossips which eventually leads to school bullying on campus. We can also find this phenomenon in many of the Korean dramas as well as in the news.
For my culture project, I would like to explore fashion in South Korea. In recent years, Korean fashion has greatly evolved. In addition, the "Korean Wave" is beginning to affect the fashion world, and Korean celebrities are starting to have a real influence in fashion, especially through Korean dramas and K-pop. In this cultural project, I hope to address the following:
The factors that have influenced that changes in Korean fashion (culture, wealth, social media)
For my final cultural project, I will talk about Turkish coffee. I will not simply talk about the preparation, but the history, customs, and traditions accssiated with it. Turkish coffee has a long history and plays an important role in social interactions. I will also talk about the art of fortune telling and coffee grounds.
For my culture project I would like to look into the South Korean attitude towards North Korean refugees and defectors. My goal is to gain a greater understanding of why some South Koreans discriminate or show indifference towards North Koreans who have escaped. Some of the things I will research is the history of Korea and the splitting of North and South Korea and the current differences between the two countries in terms of social, linguistic, cultural, and political factors that may be reasons for the indifferent perspective South Koreans have towards North Korean defectors.
Don't worry too much about giving us a lengthy history lesson but focus on the differences that may explain the attitudes of South Koreans towards former North Koreans.
