  • For my culture project, I am looking to research and talk about Korean pop culture mainly as it pertains to music and music videos. I am interested in this topic because of the marketing tactics behind it. As a business major, I am interested in knowing the target markets, intent, and how popular Korean Pop culture is. This topic is very broad and I believe would make for an interesting presentation.

My learning goals include the following:

    1) Names of popular artists and songs in order to strike conversations

    2) Vocabulary of music terms

    3) Popculture terms

    4) Who's popular in Korea and who is not

    5) Why there is a Kpop craze

    6) Various vocabulary ranging from verbs and objects

    7) Other cultural terms such as plastic surgery and its role in society

  • In a previous cultural post I have developed historical reasons for a niche between Bhasa Indonesia Baku (formal language that is taught at school) and Bhasa Jakarta(informal oral lingua franca of Jakarta since the 17th century). In light of the fact that Jakarta is a port city with it's face to the north, this hypothesis is consistent with the fact that the Indonesian words for northeast and northwest is timur laut(east sea) and barat laut(west sea). Moreover, it demonstrates that the development of culture and language happened in proximity to the land and seascapes of the archipelago nation. The cultural presentation will focus on the Sama people of eastern Indonesian island of Sulawesi and the historical influence of the sea in shaping not just their language but almost all facets of their cultural identity.

For most peoples of the world agriculture had lead to a more or less settled life. In the Sama settlements of Tukang Besi, people still consider movement to be a necessary aspect of life. It isn't uncommon for people to undertake everyday journeys called pallilibu in search of fish and other sea resources in nearby environment. Therefore, the Sama have exceptional knowledge of the environment surrounding their settlements. Moreover, it is a practice of the Sama to also collect rare sea resources and bring them to trading ports in the West by embarking on pongkeq, or seasonal journeys lasting one or two months at sea. While for the Chinese, Balinese and Dutch traders this meant a reliable source of tradable goods, the Sama settlements steadily built lasting personal relationships and transferred knowledge of their home environments with other Sama settlements that had the overall effect of unifying the Sama culture and steadily expanding the Sama maritime realm.

The Sama are by no means alone in the awareness of their seascape or their movement across the sea. Other ethnic groups that share sea migration routes include the Hadarima from Yemen and the Hindus from India. First, as surfing is one of my cultural goals I hope to get immersed in the geography, vocabulary and human understanding of the sea. Second, the goal of this cultural project is to understand Indonesian identity better by looking past the national identity and uncover the details that gives rise to it. That is to say that the Indonesian identity consists of numerous ethnic identities which place a strong importance on lineage. I will be examining the one such identity in detail. Second, focus will also be placed on the present day affects of the Sama culture that is based on narratives of countless voyages across the sea. Finally, I also hope to better understand the historical background of Indonesia.

  • For my culture presentation, I want to introduce Korean pop culture too. I will show how K-pop influence Korean's economic growth and how K-pop influence Korean's tourism industry etc.

My learning goal for this project:

    1. Names of popular artists and songs

    2. Lyrics of one particular song that I want to introduce

    3. Do some research on related industries: fashion, tourism, star management, album and star goods

    4. The major entertainment companies in Korea such as YG and S&M.

  • For my cultural project, I would like to probe into the fashion in Korea. Fashion is one of the most important element in Korean. Most young ladies would spend hours in the morning to dress up and make up before they go out of their doors. Even young men care about their attire much more than men in other Asian countries. Also, the clothing of celebrities are paid with great attention. The ways they wear clothes are often showed on news, Facebook pages and Instagram sites. Celebrities’ attire strongly influence the fashion trend of Korean teenagers and are followed by thousands of fans.

    My learning goals include:

    1. Name of various Korean customs
    2. Name of some basic colors
    3. Vocabularies of different apparel, such as top, shoes, sleepwear, etc.

In addition to vocabularies, I would like to actually understand the cultural context of Korean fashion in terms of:

    1. How is fashion related to gender
    2. How much does Korean media care about fashion
    3. Business and fashion in Korea
    4. Fashion and Lifestyle
  • For my Culture Presentation, I will discuss Indian music, from classical sitar, tabla, and violin to contemporary Bollywood and Tollywood music. I hope to do research on the different ragas, or types of music, that classical musicians play. I also hope to research the history of Bollywood and Tollywood so that I can trace the changes that have been made in contemporary Indian music since these industries began. I also hope to find out the importance of these two types of music in Indian culture today, and whether people prefer one type over another.

To discuss this topic thoroughly, I'll need to learn vocabulary relating to classical music:

    names of instruments

words for song, melody, harmony, rhythm, etc.

names of different types of songs

verbs like to play, to improvise

I will also need to learn vocabulary to describe contemporary music:

words for song, movie, dance, actor/actress, singer

    names of famous singers

    names of some famous songs

verbs like to sing, to dance, to perform
