For my Cultural Project, I will be building on my first class presentation on Korean cuisine, since it was highly interesting to see how food can tell you so much about a culture and its people
For example, food can tell you about a country's environment, group traditions (through learning about dining ethics), identity development of population sections based on the type of food they consumed, and relations between ethnic cuisine and modern cuisine, which would help track historical development through the study of culinary heritage.
Hence, doing research on Korean cuisine will aid my knowledge of Korean culture and history, which would in turn help me better understand social contexts behind sentence formations and vocabulary. (For example, in terms of honorific usage)
My culture projects is about Turkish bachelorette party. There are 3 parts of traditional Turkish wedding (the engagement, henna night and the official wedding) but I have decided to talk about part 2 only because I find it very interesting and much more different from what bachelorette party looks like in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Questions to be answered:
1. What is the importance of having henna at the bachelorette party?
2. Has Henna night always been an integral part of the Turkish culture and how does it differ from what the Henna night looked like in the past?
For my cultural project I will be studying the Jewish Holiday Passover. I think it will be an appropriate topic given that the date of my presentation coincides with passover being observed. I think the passover holiday interests me because of how symbolic everything is. Everything people say, eat, do has meaning or represents something that happened in the passover story. I also find it interesting because it is a more interactive holiday. This project relates to my language learning because I would like to learn the Hebrew words and blessings that are used for Passover.
My learning goals for this project are:
learn 10 words that go along with Passover
learn the story of Passover
learn the words for the foods eaten during Passover
For my culture project, I will hopefully be presenting on the Korean military. In Korea, the military is a huge part of the culture to such an extent that it can be considered a cultural value. The military affects all Korean men and is a big issue for some of my friends today who are Korean citizens. I will talk about the importance of the military to the country such as why do they need it? I will also talk about sentiments among Korean people towards the military. This project will provide a deeper understanding for the way men act/behave in Korea today.
My learning goals for this project are:
1. Determine the sentiments that men in Korea have towards the military
2. What purpose does the military serve?
3. Why is it necessary?
4. Learn the guidelines, specifics, and punishments associated with the military
5. Brush up on some past history and current news in Korea as it relates to the military
My interest in Korean culture and language started with my introduction to Korean TV shows and dramas. In fact, watching Korean dramas has been a major part of my Korean language and culture learning experience. As a result, I have decided to do my cultural project on Korean dramas. My presentation will include the following:
1. What words and phrases have I learned from Korean dramas?
2. What aspects of the Korean culture did I learn about?
3. What words, phrases, style of speaking, gestures and body language are used in Korean dramas?
4. What image of the family, society and relationships is shown in the dramas?
5. How is the politics and governmental structure of Korea shown in the dramas?
6. How is the history of Korea portrayed in the dramas?
7. Which cultural traditions are that are most frequently shown in the dramas?
8. Are there any misrepresentations in the dramas? If yes, what are they and why do they exist?
Preparing for this project will enable me to learn new Korean words and phrases which are used in different situations such as in someone's house, workplace, university, restaurant etc. It will also help me with my pronunciation and tones. It will also build my knowledge of the popular culture in Korea.
For my cultural project, I am going to discuss the controversial issue of cosmetic surgery in Korea. I chose this topic because this is a phenomenon that is prevalent in Korea as well as in most of Southeast Asia. I personally have family in Thailand who have received cosmetic surgery without a second thought about it. It is simply the trend in these regions of Asia and essentially a norm at this point in time. This project relates a great deal to my language learning as it portrays a major facet of the Korean culture. It tells you what the general way of life and thought is in Korea and what people view as "normal." It is also interesting to see how most Americans may view this trend. Here is an idea: (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alicia-chon/the-issue-with-south-kore...).
My Learning Goals:
1. Learn about increasing trend of cosmetic surgery
My culture project is going to be about the Korean education system.
In Korea, education is heavily emphasized and is praised and criticized for several reasons.
My learning goals for this presentation include:
Reasons for the heavy investment in education
Structure of school
Structure of classroom; hierarchy, teacher's powers
Addressing each other (students, teachers, superiors)
Praise for Korean system
Criticism for Korean system
Key phrases
Even though I won't exactly be using Korean in classroom setting after this semester, I believe that this project will help me learn more about the Korean mindset. Korea has a hyung/noona (big brother/sister) culture where respect and following elders is emphasized -- something that is different from Western culture and seen in Korean education.
For my final culture project, I worked on Korea's Plastic Surgery Phenomenon with Christy.
My learning goals for that include:
1. Learning about the trends of cosmetic surgery. When did it start, and what caused this trend?
2. Cost differences in the different types of surgery between Korea and USA.
3. Risks of plastic surgery
4. Cultural relevance of plastic surgery
5. Why do so many Koreans undergo plastic surgery? Costs and benefits?
I believe that this project will help me learn more about the Korean culture and learn why they do plastic surgery. Koreans value education and high social class, so perhaps plastic surgery has a connection with this topic.
For my culture project I want to examine the history of the Caste system in India, its effects, and the extent to which it is still practiced today. This topic relates significantly to my language learning because it was and remains a deep embedded part of Indian culture. As we have learned in SDLC 105, culture and language are highly correlated and impact one another. For example, in India, they say "anger is coming upon me" whereas in the US we say "I am angry". The former implies that something external is influencing and affecting the actor while the later expresses the actor as the active agent. This is something I have not studied yet, but I would guess that one product of the caste system is that Indians have low locus of control, and thus, their sentences (more than American expressions) might be more passive.
My learning goals for this project are to:
1. learn the history of the caste system
2. Understand basic Hindu concepts applied in the caste system
3. Learn how and why it was abolished
4. The extent to which its effects are still felt, or the extent it is still practiced

You'll need to focus on the extent the system still exists. Background is important, but you may get stuck in background. I'd like to see you explore the links between language and the caste system. That seems very interesting.
