Cultural Post 4: The Reality of the "Alba" (Part-Time Worker)
Date: 4/12/26

Artifact: A YouTube vlog titled "A Day in the Life of a Korean Café Part-Time Worker (Alba)" showing a barista’s 8-hour shift.

This artifact is a "day-in-the-life" video of a kape-alba (카페 알바—café part-time job). The worker in the video records their entire process, from opening the shop to the final cleaning at night. I chose this because it shows the "behind-the-scenes" of the professional Korean I have been studying with David. The worker uses a very specific "service voice"—a higher, friendlier pitch—every time a customer enters. They constantly repeat phrases like eoseo-oseyo (어서오세요—"Welcome") and jumun dowadeurilgeyo (주문 도와드릴게요—"I will help you with your order").

My impression of this vlog is that the work is much more intense than it looks. The worker is constantly moving, checking the bal-hyo (발효—fermentation) of the bread, and wiping down the kyesean-won (계산원—cashier) station. The value here is bujireon-ham (부지런함—diligence). In Korea, there is no "down time" for a worker; if there are no customers, you are expected to find something to clean or organize. This video taught me that my language skills are only half the job. I also need to be physically fast to match the bbali-bbali (빨리빨리—"hurry, hurry") culture of Seoul.

The most interesting part was seeing the worker hand over receipts and drinks using du-son-euro (두 손으로—two hands). Even when the shop was incredibly busy, they never forgot that small sign of respect. This artifact makes me realize that being a good worker in Korea is about maintaining a "performance" of politeness and efficiency at all times. It is a very different vibe from the more casual service in the U.S. This vlog serves as a perfect final guide for me. It shows me exactly what my daily life will look like this summer and reminds me that my hard work will be seen as a sign of my character and my respect for the customers.
