As we went through the last month of this semester, I spared some time to review what I learned throughout the semester. First of all, I went through the vocabulary list that I made adding all the words that I did not feel the most comfortable with while reading news articles. I realized that although I do not remember all of them as clearly as when I just learned, I made a big improvement towards understanding and communicating more effectively. It was hard to keep up with news articles every other day or at least one in few days, but it was rewarding as I feel more comfortable reading those by which I can understand politics and economy better. I hope I can keep this habit over this summer and as I go on.

I also realized that this semester has been the time I encouraged myself to get more interested in Korean literature. In retrospect, I had good memories reading Yoon Dongju(윤동주), a Korean poet from the Japanese imperialist period, during my military service, searching all the words and expressions I did not understand. Yoon wrote truly beautiful poems, some of which made me think for a long time to understand their true meanings behind analogies. Also, I bought a modern Korean short story collection last summer, which I enjoyed reading very much since it was fun and interesting to see how much the Korean language changed over the last century and how it was like living in that depressing period in Korean history. Then, this class connected my interest in modern Korean literature (mainly from 20th century) with contemporary Korean literature. As I was reading a Han Gang(한강)’s book, I was impressed how anyone can express such complicated emotions in words. I also realized that there were a lot of words being used that I know but have not used for a while, which I should brush up on. I hope I grow to get more into modern Korean literature with this semester as the starting point.

I have been reading a lot about SKT, one of the biggest three Korean mobile carrier companies, getting hacked and leaking personal information of up to 25 million subscribers, nearly half of the whole population of Korea. In response, the company has been striving to recover the leakage although facing many challenges such as running out of USIM inventory for replacements. From the learning perspective, these news articles were not hard at all, but I had to deal with a few words that I am not so familiar with when it comes to responses in politics since those articles mainly described hearings and discussions on necessary legislation. However, I know from the learning experience throughout this semester that if there are words that I think are unfamiliar, today will be the day they are the most unfamiliar and will be less and less as I keep doing this.
