Korean Beauty or K-Beauty is a rising phenomenon within the Western states and Korea. American culture has been obsessed with Korean beauty products, such as face wash and many different types of self-care products. Koreans will call it 케이뷰티 or Keibyuti, which is an overarching term for Korean skincare products. This uptick in skin products out of Korea has a lot to do with the rise of apps like Instagram and TikTok. An influx of Korean influences and companies was pushing new skincare products not only for a profit but also because they worked at a very low cost of entry for the consumer. While some of the products can be upwards of 250$, the basic products can be bought for as little as 10$ on the TikTok shop. Americans look to these products for the promise of “Glass Skin.” While these products do work wonders for some, there has been small concern over them because they are out of the country and may not always be checked over by the correct agencies. I myself have tried some of these products and I loved them, they felt very smooth on my skin and did not irritate it like a lot of American products I have used in the past. My friends have also tried these products, and my good friend and teacher, Isaac, has recommended some to try, which I plan on using in the future. One thing that has come out of this, which is more negative, is the beauty standard that has been held not only in Korea but in many other countries. This perfect glass skin is typically unattainable by most because of the nature of skin. It's hard because I see how these products are marketed for people to get better skin, but I also think it damages the perspective of people because of how perfect the models for these products are. Even the Korean influencers who are marketing these products on TikTok push an unrealistic beauty standard.
