Discussion Post #5
Korean food (Hansik (한식)), is an essential aspect of Korean culture. According to research, i learned that dishes like kimchi (김치), bibimbap (비빔밥), and bulgogi (불고기) tell stories of Korea’s agricultural heritage and the importance of sharing meals. I think that exploring Korean foods will allow me to connect with the culture on a deeper level, as Korean culture is places an emphasis on food. Food is connected to societal values and language, and Koreans often ask "did you eat" as a way of greeting people. Additionaly, I think that understanding the names and meanings of dishes, ingredients, and cooking methods will enhance both language learning and cultural appreciation.
My learning plan incorporates practical activities like visiting Korean restaurants to practice ordering in Korean and observing dining customs. I also plan to create a Korean recipe book, which will reinforce vocabulary related to ingredients and cooking techniques. Through these efforts, I aim to deepen my understanding of Korean language and culture while enjoying its delicious cuisine.

I love how you’ve connected food with both language learning and cultural understanding! Korean cuisine is such a rich and meaningful part of the culture, and you're absolutely right that dishes like kimchi, bibimbap, and bulgogi carry deep cultural significance. It’s fascinating how food is not just about eating in Korea, but also about connecting with others, as seen in the greeting “Did you eat?” It shows just how important meals are to relationships and social interactions.
I think your learning plan is also very intersting. I think visiting Korean restaurants to practice ordering in Korean is a great way to immerse yourself and put your language skills into real-life context and something that I haven't thought to do. I also really like your idea of creating a Korean recipe book since it not only helps with vocabulary related to food but also gives you a hands-on experience with Korean cooking traditions. I'm curious how your plan is going? Have you tried any Korean restaurants so far and if so how is it going?
