Culture in Korea has a lot of food built into it, one of my favorite dishes that I have had is Bibimbap. It is a classic rice dish that is eaten in all parts of the world but is a specialty in Korea. It comes in many different forms, people often eat it as egg rice, and meat, but can also be opted for tofu or something that is non-meat for vegetarians. The term Bibimbap is essentially saying “mixing rice” which is exactly what the dish is. I have actually had Bibimbap many times in my life, including at our very own dining hall. While the Bibimbap is my favorite dish it is definitely a step down at our dining hall compared to an authentic Korean kitchen. I have had bibimbap from authentic places in New York and also in Richmond. When done right it is amazing and I took the opportunity to really immerse myself in the food, going to Flushing NY which is a largely Asian-dominated area. I also have had bibimbap from places around Richmond but I do not think they compare to the one I had in Flushings. One time my instructor Isaac and I made Bibimbap in my UFA, we went to a local Asian mart and gathered all the materials we needed in order to create the dish. While it was not resultant quality it still was delicious. It reminds me of comfort food, like what we have in America. It is eaten by so many different people and creates community. Another interesting note I found on Wikipedia is that by CNN Traverlers rankings it is #40 out of 50 of the most delicious foods. I plan on going to Korea one day and trying authentic Bibimbap which is on my bucket list of things to do in Korea.
