Fashion in Korea is something that I have spent a lot of time dissecting over the past year or so. Isaac has shown me a lot of different ways in which fashion can be used to express oneself and build connections with others. Korean fashion is a popular topic among the younger generation, with new brands and designers popping up out of the blue on a weekly basis. I have taken a lot of inspiration from different Korean fashion trends that have also shared their way to Western states, such as oversized and baggy looks, especially in the department of jeans and hoodies. More than ever people are able to start trends online with the simple post of a video which has launched many new trends. In the early times, 1950s-60s western culture was bleeding its way into South Korea, In the 1970s-80s the switch to factory-produced cheap clothing was apparent, the idea behind these is that they were factory-produced and ready to be worn off the rack. By the 90s you could start to see the increase in popularity of designer brands in Korea. Personally this is the side of fashion that we still see today in the younger generations, although there has been a shift recently to Y2K styles that are louder and draw more attention from the public eye. Not only are there Korean designers but also Japanese and western influence and designers that were aiding in pushing the culture. Overall there have been many shifts in fashion bit Koreans take pride in their work over the years and have produced many monumental pieces and brands that are sought after by many not only in Korea but across the world.
