The diagram from the linguistic article shows how different fields like phonetics, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and computational linguistics are related to each other and together they form a language. Because I am learning Korean, I need to use this information to approach my learning plan from a holistic perspective. I think that phonetics and phonology would help with my pronunciation, while syntax and semantics would allow me to understand the grammatical foundations. Sociolinguistics and pragmatics would be very important for me to understand Korean cultural nuances. (ex: honorifics).
Because my learning style is hands-on, I will most likely use interactive strategies to improve my Korean. From the model, I will be using pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics because they are applicable to real-world use and can be learned through immersing myself in the culture. Hands-on activities like translating Korean song lyrics, watching Korean media, and taking part in cultural activities will allow me to be engaged while learning the language. However, the diagram also helped me realize that syntax and semantics are important, so I will be learning them through quizzes and interactive vocabulary learning.
