January Journal Entry
During my first meeting with my language learning partner, David Kim, we set a weekly meeting time and sketched a plan for what the rest of our semester would look like. We decided to watch Single’s Inferno 2 so that I could learn more about the dating culture in Korea, as that is something I am unfamiliar with. Having watched a couple episodes, I have already learned so much new vocabulary that people use in casual conversation, which I wouldn’t know otherwise. During this semester, I hope to learn more about the differences in dating culture between America and Korea and also expand my vocabulary so that I can comfortably converse with my Korean international friends when talking about our relationships and personal life. We have decided to only speak Korean during our meetings and limit English to only use it when I have questions about what a certain word or phrase means. I think this will encourage me to learn more terms and phrases, as I will be forced to develop a greater sense of understanding of the language through context and conversations. I am excited to learn more about Korean culture and the language itself, as this is not something that can easily be taught in a classroom setting or through textbooks. I am looking forward to increasing the amount I speak in Korean on a weekly basis, as I am limited in who I can speak Korean with and settings that allow me to comfortably do so. Something I am a little nervous about is only speaking in Korean, as I am an avid Konglish user, meaning that I consistently switch between Korean and English without even realizing it. I hope that being more aware of my back and forth between Korean and English will help me to be more disciplined in my Korean conversations and that through this, I can improve my language and speaking consistency. This will also ultimately help with conversation flow, especially when speaking with my parents, as they will have an easier time following what I am saying. In addition to this, I am hopeful that I will learn more about Korean music and I plan on getting ample music recommendations from David so that I can expand my music taste and knowledge on music. Being a huge visual and auditory learner, I am excited to immerse myself in the forms of media that I find to be most engaging. I will also be learning a lot of new words and phrases through listening to new music and exposing myself to different music genres. Overall, I am looking forward to learning with my language partner and being more in touch with my culture in a way that I haven’t been before. I know that this will help me to be more aware of my culture and this will help me long term when I visit Korea next. Also, this will encourage me to take time to myself when I watch TV shows and listen to music, as these are ways I engage in self-care. I am excited to see what this semester has in store for me and am eager to learn and apply my knowledge throughout my day to day.
