Turkish Cultural Post #5

Turkish wedding is really unique. Types of wedding are vary throughout its cities, provinces and villages. But it is similar in way that people are expected to get permission from their families first. The prospective groom must ask for the woman’s hand in marriage (kiz isteme). During the evening of the engagement, the bride have to make a perfect Turkish coffee for the guests and serve them by herself. The groom gets a coffee with salt and if he drinks it, it means that he can go through all the hardships in the marriage life. Often couples have a religious ceremony a few days before the legalities are completed. One more fun fact is that bride's friends write their names on her wedding shoes, and the bride has to dance on her heel in the post-wedding party. If their names is worn away, they have to marry in near future. If their names are still on the shoes, the marriage is not going to happen soon. I think it is really interesting that marriage shows lots of myths. Since it is a huge part of the society, it represents lots of traditions. Similar to that of South Korea, we can also see some wedding culture in cities are changing because of westernization.
