Turkish 111: Cultural post 2

Last year I learned about the history and customs surrounding Turkish coffee. This week Sezgi actually made some Turkish coffee for me and read my fortune. She brought coffee and lokum (Turkish delight) from Istanbul just for this lesson. I learned that drinking coffee is supposed to last an hour or even longer, getting coffee is a social activity in Turkey. Getting coffee to go is completely outside of the cultural norms in Turkey. Not only are you supposed to drink your coffee slow, you always read your fortune with your friends. Almost all Turkish women know how to read coffee grounds, some are better than others. An in depth reading can take hours. Sezgi read my fortune. She saw a mosque, meaning I will go to an Islamic country (maybe Turkey). She saw a swan, meaning I will go to a fancy event soon. And she also saw two paths, which means I will have to make a tough decision. She also showed me a Turkish coffee fortune telling app. You take a picture of your grounds and then the app gives you your fortune. I thought that was so cool that the custom is still being kept alive with the modern generation.
