The culture of beauty is a concept in South Korea that intrigues my curiosity continuously.
Plastic surgery is a procedure that is extremely popular in South Korea. Because I have not been to Korea, this cultural post is going to be based purely on my opinion, as a third person view in a different country. Among plastic surgery, a procedure that is particularly popular, is the double eyelid surgery. I believe that this procedure is popular because Koreans believe that having double eyelids and bigger eyes are a more significant symbol of beauty. Due to this issue, many young citizens of Korea, possibly as young as middle school, are having interest in plastic surgery. Some children are bullied for the way they look, which adds to the high rate of suicide in Korea.
I believe that the Korean culture of beauty could be more embracing of uniqueness. Every is beautiful and special in their own way. However, having a narrow perspective of beauty, contributes to high rates of plastic surgery and the inability to be accepting of difference.
