Sixth Cultural Post

This week with my language partner I learned about families in Turkey and how they are structured. The previously posted video along with many in class exercises that Haktan provided me with were very useful in becoming more familiar with the many different words that are used to refer to different family members.

The family relatives all have very specific names depending on who in the family you are referring to. For example, in english there is only one word to describe your grandmother; however in Turkish, there is a different word to describe your mother's mom and your father's mom. There are also differences in the grandfather, aunt, and uncle vocabulary.

This cultural nuances in vocabulary was interesting to me and made me question whether the difference has to do with the fact that Turkey is more of a collectivist culture, where respect to elders and certain members of the family is given more importance.
