Shabbat or how my grandparents would call it- Shabes

In Yiddish, Shabes means rest. As the seventh day of the Week, it is the day of rest. Jewish practice begins when the sun goes down Friday night; it lasts until the exact time Saturday night.

Interestingly enough, this day is considered festive; this is the part of Judaism that I find quite interesting. During this period, people are not supposed to partake in the regular action of their everyday life; rather they are supposed to think spiritually about their lives. How someone can live their weekends with a lack of work boggles my mind. Sometimes people prepare food in advance of Shabbat, others pre-tare their toilet paper for the weekend. Some orthodox Jews don't even use electricity during this time. (For someone who is afraid of the dark- wow...) I am thankful that I am not extremely conservative or orthodox. While driving is not a big deal, unless you live in the city as an Orthodox/Conservative Jew, bypassing using a car can be difficult as well.  I have a friend who couldn't buy the last Harry Potter novel because it was during Shabbat- and paying money for something is considered work.

This holiday is extremely interesting and I am mesmorized by how it diferenciates among different sects of the religion.
