Normally the transition from a spoken to an extinct language occurs when a language undergoes 

language death, while being replaced by a different language in a community or society. I think it is very common to forget the old and adapt new words as the technology develops everyday. the article 

"Revives Language on Verge of Extinction" is very interesting as the way it talks about tribal languages and how they are not spoken anymore. I guess the idea of creating a dictionary to remember words from people who lived and spoke different language many decades ago is great. that way, a language will live long and the new generation will have an opportunity to know about the past and the history of an ancient language.
