How do languages go extinct? Respond to the reading, reflecting on what happens when a language dies. How can linguists help preserve a language? Can a language ever be brought back to life?
Languages have the chance of going extinct if there are no individuals speaking the language. A lot of time when the language disappears, the culture disappears with it. Languages can be preserved in songs or recordings. The reading discusses the Siletz becoming terminated but was able to be brought back through clinging to former reservation lands and cultural anchors in songs and dances. This made me really think about Bangladesh. When Bangladesh was known as East Pakistan and governed by West Pakistan, West Pakistan tried their utmost to change the language of Bangladesh from Bengali to Urdu. The Pakistanis actually tried to make a country lose their own language, but Bangladesh fought long and hard for their language and now Bengali/Bangla is one of the top 10 most spoken languages in the world!
State your learning goals for this week and how you went about accomplishing these goals.
