SDLAP 105 Discussion #3

Currently, I am not learning a language this semester. But from my previous experience of learning Spanish I learned from knowing the vocabulary first then trying to fit those into grammar structures or semantics.  But I think it would not be a bad idea to try to apprehend the semantics as a first step next time I try to approach learning Spanish. Looking at the diagram in Aitchison’s linguistics, i think when I learn Korean next semester I will try to combine pragmatics with stylistic literature to see if I could use my current knowledge about the language to have a better understanding on the context that it is used in. As I was reading the article, I did not have a preference to one disciplinary approach over other. As long I can learn the language and be able to use it. I think I do not have a preference because I haven’t really found a perfect method to master a language. But I would love to work more on my vocabulary and rather than quickly moving over grammar structures in the language. I think my knowledge of language structures will help me stay motivated during my learning process. Usually if an individual goes over the grammar or concept that are not fun or repetitive, they would easily lose interest and never master the language. By knowing how important these structures are and what they do for me when I am learning the language will help me stay focused and persevere through the tough times that might come in apprehending the target language.
