As I’ve started to make a comprehensive presentation of my goals I realize that many steps and actions are required to become proficient. The last time I learned a language from scratch was in the seventh grade, so it was interesting to look back at what my previous language learning experiences entailed and I hope to take advantage of that knowledge as I create my weekly lessons.
In this next month, I hope to start by building a strong foundation in the Korean language. As a beginner in learning Korean, it's essential to set realistic and achievable goals to make steady progress. In my first month, I want to focus on building a strong foundation in the Korean alphabet, Hangul. Familiarize myself with each character's pronunciation and practice basic reading and writing. Additionally, I want to start learning common Korean phrases and greetings to help me communicate in simple everyday situations. Begin with basic grammar rules and simple sentence structures to construct basic sentences. Utilize language learning apps, online resources, and my Koren partner Hannah. Consistency is key, so dedicating some time each day to practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
As I conclude my first full week of learning Korean, my emotions about language learning have been a mix of pride, frustration, and enthusiasm. I take pride in my progress, especially in memorizing basic greetings during a successful session with Hannah. However, pronunciation has been a source of frustration as I grapple with the nuances of sounds that can look one way but sound differently in Korean. Despite this challenge, I remain enthusiastic about the journey. The connection between the language and culture has been enriched by having two Korean roommates who exposed me to various aspects of Korean culture, including food, basic interactions, and cultural norms. Watching Korean shows, including K-dramas and reality TV, has provided a valuable immersion experience. These shows not only entertain but also simulate aspects of Korean life, offering insights into societal norms and daily interactions.
Experimenting with new learning strategies for listening, speaking, reading, and writing has been crucial. The success of memorizing greetings showcased the effectiveness of practical sessions. However, a not-so-successful experience was encountered in the challenge of mastering pronunciation intricacies. Reflecting on my experiences, I've made revisions in my task lists and adjusted short-term and long-term goals. These past few sessions have been a dynamic learning process, and I look forward to further exploring the Korean language and culture in the coming months.
