In response to current events, my first Korean class this semester began with reading news articles on the Wuhan organed coronavirus. Similarly, with other countries around the globe, xenophobia and racism had exacerbated due to the spread of this infectious disease. Brenda and I looked at in total of two articles which talked about the false rumors traveling around the internet, and South Korea’s report on the current events.
The first article discussed the rumors and the controversies regarding Korean citizens’ return to South Korean from traveling or working in China. The news media interviewed a Basketball coach that works in Wuhan and asked him to explain the situation and the current status of living in China. Kim, the sixty-year-old coach, clarified that the situation in China is not as dramatic as people have shared on the internet, there are sufficient supplies and stores are operating as usual. However, Kim said “국가를 위해서 나와서 애쓰는 일꾼들인데, 너그러운 마음으로 받아주셨으면 좋겠어요”, which means he wishes the people of Korea and generously accept workers like him back into his home country.
The second article discussed a very weird incident that occurred in Daegu, South Korea. A video was shared on a Facebook page of a medical officer dressed in quarantined hazmat suits chasing a patient in a subway station, causing many citizens to flee the subway station. However, the video was proven to be a “몰 카” shorten for “몰래 카메라,” a hidden camera prank. The video caused rising anxiety across South Korea, fearing the spread of the coronavirus to South Korea. The article continued with an interview with the head of the Broadcast department and Daegu’s police department stating that “우한 폐렴과 관련해 사회적 혼란과 국민의 과도한 불안을 야기하는 허위조작정보에 대해서는 방송통신심의위원회와 함께 적극적으로 대응해 나가겠다”, which means that they will punish those that distort and forge false information causing public anxiety and fear.
