Learning Journal 1

In my first Korean Class with my Learning Partner Brenda and my classmates Olivia and Amber, we first discussed the topics and areas of the Korean Language and culture that we wanted to explore. We have planned a practical class schedule that will help us achieve our goals set in our Learning Plan, such as learning new vocabularies in specific areas of interest, learning the basic grammatical sentence structure, and forming sentences. We have also came up with a list of topics and areas that we are interested, such as Korean Pop Music (K-POP), Korean Drama (K-Drama), Korean food, and Korean culture. We have exchanged our previous experiences with the language and the culture, and Brenda came up with the idea that we would also do a Korean food trip to New Grand Mart, where she will explain further about the Food and Drinking culture in Korea to us. Olivia and Amber have also recommended to me a few Korean Television Series and Reality TV shows for me to watch to gain a better understanding of the Culture, such as Reply 1988, Reply 1997, Signal, etc.

 

Self-Introduction:

 

안녕하세요. 제 이름은 유팅 입니다.

Hi, My name is Yuting.

저는 만 20(스무) 살 입니다.

I  am 20 years old.

저는 종국 유학생 입니다.

I am a Chinese international student.

생일은 5()24(이십사) 입니다.

My birthday is on May 24th.

전공역사 입니다.

My major is History.

저는 여동생 한 명 있습니다.

I have one younger sister.

저는 제일 좋아하는 가수는 방탄소년단 입니다.

My favorite singer is BTS.

 

The highlighted part of the sentence are key words that my Learning Partner have emphasized for us to memorize, and use interchangeably, substituting them with other words.

 

For Example:

종국 China, 미국 USA, 일본 Japan. 프랑스 France

역사History, 생물학Biology, 수학 Mathematics

여동생 Younger Sister, 남동생 Younger brother, 형/오빠 Older brother, 누나/언니 Older sister, 외동Only Child

딸 Daughter, 아들Son

7(칠)월29(이십구)일 July 29th

11(입이)월12(입일)일 November 12th (very difficult pronunciations)

스물 살20 Years old, 열아홉 살 19 Years old

 

Not only we have learned how to introduce ourselves, we have also learned how to write simple sentences. Through this process, because each individual’s self-introduction is different, we also get to learn many other vocabs like stated above, and simple phrases that people brought up during classes that they heard before:

또 봐 See you again

This first class allowed me to take the first step in completing my first task in creating a self-introduction in Korean. I am excited to see how this paragraph changes throughout the semester after I have learnt to write and use a more complicated sentence structure, and learn more advance things to say in an introduction. I will make sure to practice reading it and memorizing it a few times week, and maybe even practice with my Korean friends, to improve my pronunciation and confidence in using the language. I have already recorded myself several times for the past week to practice, and I will continue to keep a log of me reading the speaking Korean, to see how I grow and improve over the semester.
