Language Journal # 8
This final week I have focused most of my energy on writing and reading where it was a simple sign or a text message I tried to read it. My English reading abilities are really quick thanks to the years of speed reading courses my middle school made me endure. So I have gotten used to simply looking at a sheet of paper and reading it in under a second. However, as I have switched over to Korean it is so much harder to read I think speaking it is mainly confidence and practice. However, to improve your reading level and skills you have to constantly be reading from easier words to basic books. I had started out with webtoons and while it isn't as difficult due to the images that can are similar to context clues. I often find that I have shorter reading stamina and my eyes get easily tired from reading hangul, it's like my brain gets overwhelmed and wants to turn off. I think that is an area I need to work on more, having more patience and reading stamina. While I know that I need to reading everything instead of hitting that convenient translate button it is much harder to incorporate into my routine. I have also found difficulty in how words are written in hangul to better explain it certain fonts and handwriting is much harder to understand. I think that if I want to better my reading I need a language partner to motivate me to continue reading and help untangle my sentences. Janette and I had read some of the letters BTS had written for their fans as one of our exercises and while it was very challenging it was very helpful. Incorporating outside or unordinary resources really help me focus and have more interest in learning. While opening a textbook and studying a language can seem simple in practice it is much harder and takes more discipline to complete. I think having patience and taking some breaks can really improve your skills by so much more. While I often have trouble trying to not compare my abilities and skills with others I still find myself doing so. As much as I would want to instantly be fluent it takes more work and time than I may have as a much busier college student. And honestly, that is okay I want to make learning fun and joyful and not make my brain associate negative emotions and connotations with studying Korean. Overall there is still much to be done and I still have two massive months to continue my practice and study. I want to continue using webtoons, children's books, and other reading resources to improve my reading. While I may need to sound out my words like a child that's fine if I need to take my time to read longer words that's also fine if my brain gets overwhelmed and needs a break that is also fine. Be understanding and be your own advocate when it comes to language learning.
