This week we started with common vocabulary for items we need to know. Bu Julie brought in some dinner place items. She also went through the vocabulary for items in the room, like door, chair table, left, and right. The class structure is significantly different from SDLC 110. Bu Julie believes full immersion into the language to be a more productive way to learn. I was at first uneasy about the learning plan because I had never spoken complete sentences in Indonesian. I was also uneasy because Brad and Zach are much more advanced and experienced. By the second week, I was much more comfortable with the situation. I feel like I am retaining the information better and have more of a desire to study. In SDLC 110, I would review, but not with the determination I have had this semester.
Bu Julie operates the class by introducing a topic the first week and then reviewing the previous week’s information. She also builds on information by incorporating vocabulary in here lectures. Bu Julie assigns writing homework for us to complete. The homework requires us to each write a half page paper in Indonesian that uses the vocabulary of that week’s class. We then read the paper to help us work on our pronunciation. So far, I have enjoyed the class.
